Dehradun: Vice President and Chairman of Rajya Sabha Jagdeep Dhankar On Sunday a new salvo was launched against Sibal Chapel on the declaration of ‘symptomatic malaise’ of Supreme Court Bar Association (Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)) headed by the senior Supreme Court advocate in the rape and murder case of a Kolkata doctor. In an apparent criticism of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) chief Sibal, Dhankar said some “stray voices” are “compounding the pain”. On August 21, the SCBA, in a statement, termed the crime at RG Kar hospital as “symptomatic of the malaise”.

“When humanity has been humiliated, there are voices that are heard and that cause concern. They only aggravate our unbearable pain. To put it mildly, they add salt to our wounded conscience,” said the vice president.

The vice president was speaking while addressing students and faculty members at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rishikesh. Dhankar said an MP and a lawyer had called the Kolkata incident a “symptomatic malaise” and suggested that such incidents are often indecent.

Dhankar’s comments:

It is noteworthy that Sibal represented the Mamata Banerjee government in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case before the Supreme Court.

“When it comes to an MP, a senior lawyer, the culpability is extreme. There can be no excuse for such demonising thoughts. I appeal to such misguided souls to re-examine their thoughts and publicly apologise,” the deputy speaker said, while expressing strong disapproval of Sibal’s remarks.

“This is not an opportunity to look through a political prism. This political prism is dangerous, it kills objectivity. It requires an internal search,” he added.

He called the RG Kar incident “barbarism expressed in extremity” and added that it has brought shame to humanity.

“What happened on August 9, 2024 was not a simple incident. It was barbarism expressed at an extreme level, which shamed humanity. The victim belonged to a category that has always been dedicated to saving lives,” he added.

The incident, which involved the rape and murder of a female doctor on leave at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, has sparked widespread protests in West Bengal and other parts of the country. The accused, Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer at the hospital, was arrested on August 10.
