Mrs Dhoni has finally broken the silence about his relationship with Virat KohliWhile Virat has often spoken about his bond with his former captain, Dhoni had never spoken about it. During an event, Dhoni was asked about his relationship with Virat. The Indian legend did not speak much about it but called him one of the best in world cricket. Dhoni lives a private life in Ranchi and never talks about his personal life.

So, it was not a big surprise that Dhoni did not talk much about his relationship with Virat. “We have been playing since 2008/09, there is still an age gap. So I don’t know if I would say I am an elder brother or a colleague or whatever you call it. But at the end of the day, we have been colleagues, you know, we have played for India for a long time. They have been among the best as far as world cricket is concerned,” Dhoni said at the event.

Dhoni backed Virat early in his career and played a key role in his success. He did not delay Virat’s debut and handed him his first ODI cap just a few months after his success in the 2008 Under-19 World Cup.

Two years later, Virat Kohli made his T20I debut under Suresh Raina. In 2011, Virat donned his first Test cap under Dhoni. He was dropped after his first series but soon made a comeback. During the tour of Australia in 2011/12, the selectors wanted to drop Virat from the starting XI.

Dhoni backed the struggling batsman and he emerged as India’s best batsman in Perth. Virat scored a century in Adelaide and was India’s only centurion on the tour.

Virat never looked back and replaced Dhoni as Test captain just three years later. Virat went on to become India’s most successful Test captain and led his country to 40 wins in 68 matches.

Virat was one of the batsmen who excelled under Dhoni’s captaincy. In 2012, Dhoni took the rookie under his wing and made him the vice-captain.

In January 2017, Dhoni stepped down as the captain of the white-ball teams and handed over the responsibility to Virat. The wicketkeeper-batsman played under Virat’s captaincy till the 2019 World Cup. Virat and Dhoni never played together in the IPL.
