This Viral Masala Storage Hack Has Over 12 Million Views, But The Internet Is Divided

What do you do with opened masala boxes? We are talking about the small, paper-thin cardboard boxes for different powdered spices commonly found in Indian stores. Some of us may methodically empty them into airtight containers. Others may carelessly close the flaps and store them in the cupboard. Some may even have a box dedicated solely to storing different spice packets. Well, a vlogger on Instagram recently showed a hack that promises to offer another solution. His reel has clocked up over 12 million views so far. However, not all users are convinced by it.

The video was shared by Shashank Alshi. He explained that he had seen another Instagram video that showed how to secure boxes so they wouldn’t spill out. In the caption, he mentioned that his video was inspired by the video’s creator Ruby Gulfam Ali (@sanamultitalent). He demonstrates the process step by step. First, cut the small flaps on each end of a spice box. Then fold one of the larger flaps inwards. Pinch the top of the box with both palms to create a crease on each side. Finally, fold the other large flap inwards and press the edges together to “close” the box. Watch the full viral video below:

In the comments, some people found the idea interesting and useful. However, others felt it wasn’t the best storage method. Some shared potential risks and offered other tips. Here’s what some Instagram users had to say about the viral hack:

“Very good trick!”

“Thank you very much….. It is really very useful.”

“Just put it in an airtight glass jar.”

“Now show us the package by turning it over too, bro!”

“The packaging is good, but the masala may still have bugs and fungus. I have tried it, but it doesn’t work to keep the masala fresh.”

“I tried it, but some powders harden because this method is not airtight. However, it is good from a spillage perspective.”

“I have found that anything stored this way gets buggy very quickly, especially in cold, damp climates, as it is not airtight. It is best to remove the contents and place them in a sealed glass or PET plastic jar. The contents will keep for much longer.”

“I keep all the bottles and jars and keep them in a closed place. When I have time, I make labels and stick them on each bottle… Nowadays, the inner packet is inside the bottle and I cut out the name of the masala from the box and keep it in front of the cupboard door…”

Before this, a seemingly simple trick for peeling garlic swept through social media. Here too, some users were grateful, while others were not convinced. Click here here To check it out.
