TRAI publishes consultation document on ‘regulatory framework for terrestrial broadcasters’ | Technology news

New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released a consultation paper on ‘Regulatory Framework for Terrestrial Broadcasters’.

The Guidelines issued from time to time by MIB for Uplinks and Downlinks of Satellite Television Channels in India, which contain the terms and conditions for television broadcasting services, mandate broadcasters to use satellite media i.e. uplinks and downstream television channels through satellite, to provide their channels to Distribution Platform Operators (OPD).

“The advancement of technology has made it possible for broadcasters to provide their television channels to DPOs on a terrestrial basis, i.e. also using terrestrial technologies. Just like traditional television channels, which are transmitted upstream and downstream over satellite, terrestrially transmitted channels can also be transmitted by multiple DPO networks simultaneously and can be retransmitted by DPOs on commercial terms to subscribers. Therefore, there is a need to have a regulatory framework that allows the use of terrestrial technologies,” the Ministry of Communications said. .

TRAI had submitted its recommendations on regulatory framework for platform services to MIB on November 19, 2014, which included certain recommendations related to ‘Regulatory Framework for Terrestrial Broadcasters’.

Accordingly, the consultation document on the ‘Regulatory Framework for Terrestrial Broadcasters’ is being published for feedback from interested parties. The consultation document can be accessed on the TRAI website, www.trai.gov. Interested parties are invited to submit written comments on the consultation document by 15.11.2024. Counter comments, if any, may be submitted before 11/29/2024. Interested parties are requested to submit their comments and counter-comments, preferably in electronic format, on email [email protected] and [email protected], the Communications Ministry said.
