Transforming tea tourism in Assam: 34 tea estates receive approval letters under development plan

On August 17, the Assam government distributed permission letters to over 30 tea estates as part of the second phase of its tea tourism development initiative. Tourism Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, who distributed the letters, stressed that the aim of the scheme is to boost tea tourism in the state.

“Today I had the pleasure of distributing approval letters to 34 selected tea estates under Phase II of the Assam Tea Tourism Development Plan“, he shared on X. The programme represents an important step towards establishing Assam’s tea heritage as a premier global tourism destination.

“By fostering growth in rural communities and preserving our rich history, we are set to see Assam’s tea tourism thrive on the international stage,” Mallabaruah said, adding that 22 tea estates have benefited from Phase I of the scheme.

The minister stressed that while Assam has significant tourism potential, it had not been fully tapped in the past due to various obstacles. “However, the state government is now working diligently to promote tourism across all sectors by removing these barriers. Ensuring peace is crucial to attract tourists and the government is committed to maintaining a stable environment,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Assam Cabinet recently approved a bill for protection and conservation of water bodies. The Assam Urban Water Bodies Conservation and Preservation Bill contains provisions for preservation, protection, rejuvenation, conservation, regulation and maintenance of water bodies, including natural water channels, which are included in the notified master plan of the state, Minister Keshab Mahanta said after the meeting.

All water bodies within the master plan area will be scheduled and notified for easy demarcation and protection from encroachers, he said, as they not only protect the environment but also attract tourists.

The provisions will enable authorities to draw up an action plan and formulate appropriate plans and projects for the conservation and protection of water bodies, he added. All information related to water bodies will also be made available online, the minister said.
