Travel and hospitality services see increased demand for extended weekends

Holiday travel boom: Travel and hospitality services are seeing a noticeable surge in bookings as Indian travellers gear up for the extended Independence Day weekend and Raksha Bandhan. Goa, Udaipur, Mumbai and Lonavala have emerged as the top domestic destinations.

International getaways are in demand

International travel is also on the rise, with popular destinations including Bangkok, Singapore, Phuket, Dubai, Bali, Pattaya and Colombo, according to data from MakeMyTrip and Airbnb. “We are seeing a noticeable increase in bookings for domestic flights, hotels and international travel. The lengthening of the holiday, with Rakhi falling closer to Diwali compared to last year, is a key driver,” said Rajesh Magow, co-founder and group CEO of MakeMyTrip. Magow added that southern cities are seeing considerable growth, while interest in northern hill stations has declined due to weather conditions.

Airbnb sees surge in searches

Airbnb echoed this sentiment, pointing to a marked increase in interest in travel over the upcoming long weekend. Its data indicates a 340 per cent year-on-year increase in domestic searches for Airbnb stays during this period. The most popular domestic destinations include Goa, Lonavala, Puducherry, Mumbai, Bengaluru, New Delhi and Udaipur. MakeMyTrip highlighted that destinations such as Pondicherry, Mahabaleshwar, Chikmagalur, Munnar, Ooty, Coorg, Udaipur, Varanasi, Amritsar and Mandarmani are seeing the highest growth in demand.

Growing trend in domestic travel

Amanpreet Bajaj, Managing Director for India, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan, Airbnb, said, “The data reflects a growing trend among Indian travelers to explore domestic destinations for short breaks and long weekends due to their accessibility.” The top international destinations according to MakeMyTrip include Bangkok, Singapore, Phuket, Dubai, Bali, Kuala Lumpur, Pattaya, London, New York and Colombo. Meanwhile, Colombo, Kathmandu, Langkawi, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Istanbul, Pattaya, Zurich, Ho Chi Minh City and Abu Dhabi are seeing the most significant growth in demand.(With PTI inputs)
