Bengaluru, a city known for its traffic congestion, could soon experience a transportation revolution. Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) and Sarla Aviation have joined forces to explore the potential of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, or air taxis.

This partnership aims to redefine air travel by offering a faster, cleaner and more accessible mode of transportation. The collaboration will focus on the development of operating models for seven-seat eVTOL aircraft, which could significantly reduce travel times between the city center and the airport.

Cost of air taxis

Sarla Aviation plans to make air ride sharing as affordable as traditional taxi services. According to their estimates, a trip from Bengaluru airport to Electronic City could be completed in just 19 minutes by air, at a cost of approximately Rs 1,700. This compares favorably with current taxi trips, which can take more than two hours and cost around 2,500 rupees. for premium services.

The CEO of Sarla Aviation expressed excitement about the partnership and highlighted its potential to alleviate Bengaluru’s traffic woes. The company aims to reduce travel times between Indiranagar and the airport from 1.5 hours to just 5 minutes using electric flying taxis. The CEO wrote on LinkedIn: “I am proud to announce our partnership with Bangalore International Airport Ltd, marking an important step in addressing Bengaluru’s congestion challenges.” “Currently, a trip from Indiranagar to the airport can take 1.5 hours. Very soon, we will reduce it to just 5 minutes with Sarla Aviation’s all-electric flying taxis. This initiative not only promises to improve transportation efficiency but also aligns with sustainability goals. Electric aircraft offer a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuel-powered vehicles, reducing carbon emissions and contributing to a healthier environment. Earlier in June, Madhya Pradesh had started an intra-state air taxi service, connecting prominent destinations of the state including Bhopal, Ujjain, Gwalior, Indore, Khajuraho and Jabalpur.
