Tripura Labour Minister Tinku Roy said on Thursday that 20,000 people have been recruited in various government departments in the last three years.

During a debate on the issue of unemployment initiated by Congress MP Sudip Roy Barman, the minister said that 20,000 people have been recruited in different categories (regular, contractual and fixed pay scale) in the government sector in the last three years.

The minister said the process to fill 20,000 more posts in various government departments has already begun.

He said the number of registered unemployed youth has dropped from 741,305 on March 31, 2018 to 309,882 on March 31, 2024.

“It is not true that job seekers are frustrated… The number of registered unemployed across the state has almost doubled between 2018 and 2024 due to comprehensive efforts to address the problem,” he said.

Earlier, Roy Barman had attacked the BJP-led government, saying, “The number of unemployed engineers stood at 1,800, while there has been no recruitment of engineers for the past few years. Around 1,500 SLET, NET and PhD qualified youth are vying for jobs in the government sector. This figure is huge for a small state like Tripura.” Coming down heavily on the alleged delay in recruitment in various departments, Roy Barman said, “Around 5,000 employees retire from service annually, but where are the replacements?” The Congress legislator also demanded that recruitment through outsourcing and fixed salary be abolished as people who get jobs under these two categories remain deprived of various benefits.

Leader of the Opposition in the assembly Jitendra Chaudhury also criticised the government for failing to fulfil the BJP’s commitment to fill 50,000 vacant posts made before the 2018 assembly elections.

“Their leaders had promised to fill 50,000 vacant posts in the public sector before the 2018 legislative elections. Six years have passed, but where is the movement to fill those 50,000 posts? How many industries have been created in the state?

“Youth are frustrated by the lack of public sector jobs. The government must address the problem of unemployment in the state,” he added.
