Trump and Harris to face off in first debate: Five key rules

Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are set for the first-ever debate. The debate, which will air live on ABC at 6:30 am IST, will be moderated by hosts David Muir and Linsey Davis. The 90-minute event will not feature a live audience and will include two commercial breaks.

Rules of Engagement

1. Using the microphone: Each candidate’s microphone will be active only when he or she is speaking, and will be muted at all other times to ensure impartiality.

2. Question protocol: All questions will be posed by the moderators, without prior notice to the candidates.

3. Structure of the statement: There will be no opening statements. Candidates will have two minutes to respond to each question, and their opponent will have the same amount of time to rebut and an additional minute to make additional comments or clarifications. Closing statements will be limited to two minutes, with Trump speaking last due to a drawing of lots.

4. Discussion setup: Candidates will be positioned behind their podiums and will only be provided with a pen, a pad of paper and a bottle of water. No additional props or pre-written notes are permitted.

5. Interaction restrictions: During commercial breaks, no communication will be permitted between candidates and their campaign staff.
