Jaipur: After a 10th grade student stabbed another child in a government school, triggering communal violence in Udaipur on Friday, mobile internet was suspended for 24 hours in several areas of the city and all schools were ordered to remain closed.
The student injured in the attack is receiving treatment at the district hospital, while the accused is in custody. Both are minors, according to authorities.
Revenue Collector Arvind Poswal said all government and private schools in Udaipur have been ordered to remain closed until further orders in view of the law and order situation.
A team of three doctors was sent from Jaipur to Udaipur in a special plane to treat the injured boy, the collector said, adding that his condition was stable.
Divisional Commissioner Rajendra Bhatt has issued an order suspending mobile internet services for a period of 24 hours from 10 pm on Friday in Udaipur city, Bedla, Badgaon, Bleecha, Debari, Eklingpura, Kanpur, Dheekli and Bhuwana area.
The collector called on the public to ignore rumours about the incident.
On Friday, a mob set cars ablaze and pelted stones amid communal tension following the stabbing incident outside a government school in Bhattiyani Chohatta.
Prohibition orders were imposed prohibiting the gathering of people in the city.
According to police, members of some Hindu groups gathered in Madhuban in the city to protest the stabbing.
The crowd threw stones and set fire to three or four cars, police said.
As tensions escalated in the evening, markets in Bapu Bazar, Hathipole, Ghanta Ghar, Chetak Circle and nearby areas were closed.
Some rioters also threw stones at a shopping centre, damaging shop windows.
Additional police have been deployed in the city to maintain law and order.
