He Supreme Court The Centre on Monday refused to interfere in the Centre’s decision to cancel the UGC-NET 2024 exam over alleged document leaks, saying it would add to “uncertainty” and “utter chaos”. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra took note that the exam will be held again on August 21.

“The exam was held on June 18 and was cancelled on June 19. The exam is now scheduled for August 21 and the petition is challenging the cancellation of the exam and two months have already passed. Considering the petition at the present stage will only add to the uncertainty and utter chaos,” the court said.

The court added that nine hundred thousand candidates are set to appear for the exam on August 21 and hence at this late stage, the cancellation cannot be challenged. The apex court said that students appearing for the exam must have some sort of “certainty now”. It said that the central government must be “doubly cautious after the NEET-UG fiasco and hence it was cancelled. Let this process continue now.”

The apex court was hearing the petition filed by a group of candidates challenging the decision taken by the authorities to cancel the UGC-NET examination held on June 18 and conduct a fresh test on August 21. On June 19, the Centre had cancelled the University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) after an alleged leak of question papers referred the matter to the CBI for investigation.

Earlier, the top court had dismissed a PIL filed by a lawyer seeking an immediate stay on the re-evaluation of the UGC-NET exam till the CBI completes its probe into the allegations of document leaks.

The UGC-NET examination determines the eligibility of candidates to pursue research opportunities including Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) and Senior Research Fellowships (SRF).
