White City: In a rather tragic shooting in the UK, a district judge was shot dead inside the courthouse and the sheriff, Stines, was arrested in the same case.
Letcher County Courthouse Shooting: Judge Killed, Sheriff Under Arrest
The incident occurred at the Letcher County Courthouse, where the judge was shot and killed and the sheriff was arrested for the same. According to The Mountain Eagle, Sheriff Stines allegedly shot District Judge Kevin Mullins in Mullins’ office, adjacent to the Letcher District Courtroom, before turning himself in to police. The motives behind the shooting are currently under investigation.
Kentucky courts issue statement
Kentucky Courts issued a statement acknowledging the incident: “The Kentucky Court of Justice is aware of a tragic incident that occurred today in Letcher County. We are currently in contact with law enforcement agencies, including the Kentucky State Police, and are offering our full support during this difficult time.”
The statement continued: “While the investigation is ongoing, we are committed to providing assistance in any way we can.”
“There is too much violence in this world,” says Kentucky governor
Governor Andy Beshear, governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, also issued a statement calling for a “better tomorrow.” His statement read: “Sadly, I have been informed that a Letcher County District Judge was shot and killed in his chambers this afternoon. There is too much violence in this world and I pray that there is a path to a better tomorrow.”
No further injuries have been reported and police are conducting a thorough investigation into the matter. The accused, Sheriff Stines, turned himself in at the scene of the shooting and was immediately arrested; as there were cameras inside the building, all witnesses will be questioned as part of the investigation.
