UK’s University of Southampton to set up a campus in India in Delhi-NCR, becoming the first foreign university to set up a campus in the country under the new National Education Policy
A Letter of Intent (LoI) issued to the University of Southampton (UoS) was handed over by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar at an event held in New Delhi on Thursday, the Education Ministry said.
“The University of Southampton has become the first UK university to be granted a licence by the Indian government to create a comprehensive campus in the country. The granting of a licence by the University Grants Commission now paves the way for planning to move forward,” the university said in a statement.
In his address, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed confidence that such efforts will further prepare its youth for employment and foster a spirit of global understanding and cooperation.
He also highlighted that the initiative will help establish a strong interactive footprint of Brand India in the educational sphere.
In a post on X, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that this initiative is a step towards achieving the goal of ‘internationalisation at home’ as envisaged in the NEP 2020.
“The establishment of foreign university campuses in India and Indian higher education institutions abroad is not only aimed at expanding educational opportunities but at creating a vibrant ecosystem of research, knowledge sharing and global collaboration. Educational institutions across countries have a responsibility to develop ‘global citizens’ with global values who can provide solutions to global challenges,” Pradhan added.
The Education Minister further added that India, as ‘Vishwa-Bandhu’, is committed to fulfilling its global responsibilities and building a brighter future for education, innovation and progress.
Professor Andrew Atherton, Vice President for International Relations and Engagement, said the University of Southampton Delhi will be India’s first comprehensive international campus. It will produce world-class, job-ready graduates with specialised and transferable skills that will enhance India’s rapidly growing knowledge economy.
“The new University of Southampton campus will be a world-class centre for education and innovation. It will also give more British students the opportunity to experience the incredible experience of studying and living in India,” said Lindy Cameron, British High Commissioner to India.
