When a HE An employee with a relatively well-paid job turned to social networks to ask for advice on whether to leave India for better opportunities abroadThe answer was almost unanimous: uninstall Instagram.

The 23-year-old techie said he earns around Rs 1 lakh a month, which is equivalent to a package of Rs 12 lakh per annum (lpa). However, the social media activity of his friends abroad and the lifestyle they lead made the redditor start thinking less about his own country.

“I think I earn pretty well, but I still have a feeling of inferiority within myself, that I’m not doing well. This is because I see my friends pursuing higher education abroad and their stories and posts make me envious, to be honest,” the Reddit user explained.

The article continues: “Is staying in India worse than settling abroad? If I wanted to, I could study well and get a well-paid job in India and I am pretty sure I would. Still, I feel like I won’t get the infrastructure and standard of living that I would get abroad. So my question is, is it bad or is it like I am not doing well just by being in India?”

The technician admitted that he didn’t really want to go away to study, which would mean leaving behind a decent job, a family and everything else. But, due to “social pressure”, the IT worker was forced to think about whether there were greener pastures.

Despite being complex and multi-layered, the problem had a seemingly simple solution.

As one user said: “Nope. Just uninstall Instagram.”

The upvotes on that comment outnumbered those on the original post.

Some couldn’t agree more, arguing that social media was designed to evoke the fear of missing out.

“Studying abroad has its advantages, but it comes at a significant cost,” said one of them. “Everyone wants to show off and hide the difficulties.”
