Situated on top of a large hill, Chanderi Fort It is also known by the name of Kirti Durg. This historical monument serves as a testimony to the rich history, architectural opulence, and cultural significance of the country. The fort dominates the picturesque town of Chanderi as it grows from its base and spreads out over a vast expanse. The place is known for its ancient Jain temples and exquisite Chanderi sarees. This fort has witnessed numerous historical events and has been a pivotal site in the history of the region.

History of Chanderi Fort

The history of this fort is not very well documented, but it is worth mentioning as the jewel in the crown of the forts of Raigad district. Many remains of fortifications can be found near the caves. This is one of the only features that classified Chanderi as a fort. In 1656, Shivaji Maharaj conquered the entire territory up to Kalyan-Bhiwandi-Rairi. It was then that this fort came under the rule of the Marathas. The low water storage areas and the absence of any significant constructions indicate that it was probably a military base.

The shape of Chanderi is very unique and can be easily seen from any place as a really beautiful mountain. The caves and rock-cut steps are similar to those of Kalavantin Durg or Gorakhgad. There is an idol of lord Shiva inside the cave. There is also a drinking water tank very close to the cave.

The cave can comfortably accommodate 8 to 10 people at a time, making it a good place for camping. There is a part of the cave that is lined with tiles and a water cistern located at the base of the pinnacle.

The highest part of the fort is at 710 m. Chanderi offers an excellent view of all the surrounding forts which made it a viewing point or watch tower in those days. Prabalgad, Kalavantin Durg, Irshalgad, Karnala, Nakind, Vikatgad, Matheran, Mhaismal, Haji Malang, Tavli, Navra Navri are some of the prominent mountains which can be easily spotted from the top of Chanderi. At the other end of the hill stands a statue of Shivaji Maharaj.
