A Sultanpur court in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday (August 20) ordered the arrest of Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh in a 23-year-old case and asked the police to produce him before it on August 28. The court strongly opposed Sanjay Singh skipping the hearing in a two-decade-old case.
A non-bailable arrest warrant was issued against Singh, SP leader Anoop Sanda and four others on August 13 and the hearing was scheduled for Tuesday. However, the accused did not appear in court.
“The court has directed the police to arrest all the accused and produce them before the court by August 28,” a court official said.
Their lawyer Madan Singh said a bail petition for Singh and Sanda has been filed in the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court, with a hearing set for August 22. The date for the next hearing in the MP/MLA court of special magistrate Shubham Verma will be determined later in the evening, he said.
What is the case?
On 19 June 2001, a demonstration was held near an overbridge near Sabzi Mandi area of the city under the leadership of former SP MP Anoop Sanda against poor power supply. Sanjay Singh along with former councillors Kamal Srivastava, Vijay Kumar, Santosh and Subhash Chaudhary had participated in the demonstration.
A case was registered against all of them at Kotwali Nagar police station. Special Magistrate Yogesh Yadav convicted all six on January 11, 2023 and awarded them a three-month jail term.
On August 9, all six were ordered to appear before the MPs and LLMs court. When they failed to do so, special magistrate Shubham Verma issued non-bailable arrest warrants against all of them.
