UPSC postpones Engineering Services prelims and main exam; Reopen the application window. Here is everything

The Union Public Service Commission on Friday postponed the Engineering Services Examination-2025 to give “sufficient time” to aspirants to prepare for the recruitment test, an official statement said.

The development came after the government decided that recruitment for Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) would be done through Civil Services Examinations (for Traffic, Accounting and Personnel sub-cadres) and ESE (for the Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Signals and Telecommunications Subsectors and Warehouses sectors).

“To give sufficient time to the aspiring ESE 2025 To prepare for the exam, the Commission has also decided to postpone the ESE (Preliminary) and ESE (Main) exams 2025. The ESE (Preliminary) 2025 and ESE (Main) 2025 exams will now be held on June 8, 2025 and August 10. 2025 respectively,” says the statement issued by the UPSC.

As per UPSC Annual Examination Schedule, 2025, the notification for ESE 2025 was issued on September 18, 2024, with the last date of receipt of applications being October 8, 2024.


The ESE Preliminary/Stage-I test was scheduled to be conducted by UPSC on February 9, 2025, as per the rules released by the Ministry of Communications, Department of Telecommunications. The Ministry of Railways also notified the IRMS (Amendment) Rules, 2024 on October 9, the statement said. Taking into account the government’s decision to include IRMS in ESE-2025, the opening of the correction window from October 9, 2024 (starting from the next day of the last date for receipt of application – October 8 ) was put on hold, he stated.

The new application portal is now open to applicants until November 22 for new applicants and to allow old applicants (who applied during the original application period of September to October 8) to make changes, according to the release.

Thereafter, all applicants will be provided with a seven-day correction/editing period from November 23 to 29, during which they can modify/edit their details, it said.

Candidates who already applied during the September 18 to October 8 application period do not need to reapply.

However, they can update their details during the new application window and correction/editing window, if necessary, the Commission said.

ESE 2025 aspirants are advised to do the same before applying for the exam, he added.
