US Open 2024: Jannik Sinner beats Jack Draper to win the men’s singles final

Jannik Sinner is on the verge of making history at Flushing Meadows after his strong performance at the US Open Tennis Championships. After Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz were eliminated, Sinner became the favourite to win the title. The Italian tennis star did not let the doping case get the better of him and beat Jack Draper in a very physical match that took a toll on both athletes.

Sinner, the No. 1 seed, was the better player throughout the match and finished with a 7-5, 7-6 (3), 6-2 victory over Draper to reach his first title match at Flushing Meadows, and his second at a Grand Slam tournament this year. It is the first time in history that an Italian has reached the US Open singles final. The match lasted three hours and Sinner was the last man standing due to injury. In the previous edition, Sinner was eliminated in the quarterfinals, but this time he prevailed and battled for more than three hours against Jack Draper.

“It was a very physical match, as we can see. I just tried to stay mentally strong. Whoever it is, it will be a very tough challenge for me. But I look forward to it.” said Jannik Sinner

While Sinner and Draper put up a tough fight, both competitors had to be examined during a change of sides. Jannik Sinner had to receive a massage on his left wrist, while Jack Draper needed medical attention after vomiting twice at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Draper vomited on the court and had health issues. He also took a break due to the discomfort and it seemed unlikely that he would continue.

But Jack Draper kept fighting and kept Sinner on the edge in the first two sets. Sinner managed to rally back, though, and Draper’s momentum faded after that.

Sinner will now face the winner of the second semi-final match between Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe.
