US OPEN 2024: Yannick Sinner becomes US Open champion and defeats American Taylor

World number one Yannick Sinner, recently acquitted of a doping case, continued his brilliant performance and won the men’s singles title at the US Open tennis tournament by defeating American Taylor Fritz in straight sets.

Sinner displayed a brilliant example of his baseline game against 12th seed Fritz in the final at Arthur Ashe Stadium and won 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 to seal the final Grand Slam tournament of the year for the United States. The streak he has followed for the past 21 years to win the men’s singles title was extended.

Sinner, a 23-year-old Italian, said: “This trophy means a lot to me because the last few years of my career were very difficult.”

This is the second Grand Slam title of Sinner’s career. He also won the men’s singles trophy at the Australian Open earlier this year. Fritz had the chance to end the US wait, but in the final he failed to do so against Sinner, leaving the public very disappointed.

Andy Roddick was the last American player to win a men’s singles title at the US Open. He won the trophy here in 2003. Fritz was playing in the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. He was the first American player to reach the final of a Grand Slam tournament since 2009. Before him, the last player to reach a Grand Slam tournament was Roddick, who lost to Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2009.

Fritz said: “It’s amazing to have an American in the US Open final. I received a lot of support from the public throughout the week. I express my gratitude for this.

He said: “I know we have been waiting for a champion for a long time. So I am sorry that I could not finish the wait this time. But I will continue my efforts and hope to finish it next year.”

The world learned on August 20 that Sinner had tested positive for anabolic steroids twice in an eight-day span in March of this year, but managed to prove he had used them unknowingly, leading to him being banned from playing.

Sinner dominated the match from the start and gave no chance to the crowd favourite Fritz. However, the American player presented a tough challenge in the third set. At one point in this set the score was tied 3-3. Here Sinner committed a double fault, which Fritz took advantage of to take a 4-3 lead.

However, the Italian player wasted no time in coming back and winning the set and the match earned him the honour of being crowned US Open champion for the first time.
