A middle school assignment in Oklahoma has sparked controversy after a parent shared a photo of the questions online. Olivia Gray posted her daughter Nettie Gray’s world history assignment on Facebook, calling it “insane.” The assignment, titled “How did the world begin?”, included two provocative questions: “Is God real??” and “Is Satan real?”
Olivia Gray criticized the assignment, pointing out that her daughter had only been in school for a week when the task was assigned. The post quickly gained popularity, receiving over 375 likes and nearly 500 shares. Many commenters expressed concerns about the appropriateness of the assignment.
One user said: “I could understand questions about world religions in World History class that may include Christianity and other religions, but this is just bizarre and wrong. How would this be graded fairly?” Another user, who identified themselves as a teacher, added: “This is crazy. What sources are you supposed to use? I’m a teacher, and a demanding one at that. I have no problem with a high school student (or even a senior high school student) starting a research paper the first week. But this assignment is absolutely absurd. I never thought I’d say this, but I’d be better off in a Catholic school!”
Many comments condemned the assignment as an attempt to impose religious views in a public school setting. One commenter stated, “I am stunned and horrified that they are even allowed to impose or preach their own personal religion/religious biases in that manner on students in a public school in the United States.” Another added, “This is horrifying in so many ways… This teacher should go back to teaching Bible studies and stay out of public schools.”
In response to the backlash, the Skiatook Public Schools district issued a statement acknowledging that they had been made aware of the assignment via social media. The statement read, “Skiatook Public Schools was made aware of the World History assignment in question via a social media post. Once the assignment was reviewed by administration, it was determined that the presentation of the material was not conducive to our instructional plan.” The district assured that “administration and staff will continue to collaborate on best practices to meet the Oklahoma Academic Standards.”
