The United States proved their strength to the cricketing world after stunning Pakistan in a 2024 T20 World Cup match on home soil a couple of months earlier. By co-hosting the tournament with the West Indies, the United States went a step further by qualifying for the Super Eights instead of countries like Pakistan, Ireland and Canada.
The United States had defeated Canada and Pakistan in the tournament to reach the Super Eight stage. Pakistan-born American player Ali Khan, who also participated in the tournament, believes his team has the ability to beat any team on their day and not just Pakistan.
“We were not under pressure, they were. We knew we were capable of beating them. We beat Pakistan in all four aspects, including fitness,” the player said.
“We are capable of beating them (the Men in Green) again. No disrespect to them, I think we are a really good team. If we have a complete team we can beat any team on our day, not just Pakistan, but it will be a great game if we play them again,” he added.
The surprising victory of the United States over Pakistan
Monank Patel’s American team had surprised everyone. Babar Azam– Pakistan team led the T20 World Cup. After restricting the 2009 T20 World Cup champions to 159, they equalled their score despite having a chance to win in the regulation 40 overs. The match went into the Super Over where USA made 18 batting first and restricted the Men in Green to 13/1.
Monank Patel and Saurabh Netravalkar were the two main stars, however, Aaron Jones, Andries Gous and Nitish Kumar He also played a crucial role. Netravalkar bowled the all-important Super Over, while he took 2/18 in his four overs in the regular contest.
Monank scored a fifty, while Jones and Nitish took the team into the Super Over with their unbeaten knocks of 36 and 14 respectively.
The United States had posed challenges even to India in the group stage, which further highlights their strength.
