To boost its growing tourism industry, Uttar Pradesh is launching catamaran rides in the holy cities of Ayodhya, Mathura and Kashi. These new, modern vessels will offer tourists a beautiful and enjoyable way to explore the state’s historic rivers, aiming to compete with popular water tourism spots like Goa and Kerala.
Through a collaboration between the Uttar Pradesh State Tourism Corporation and the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), two catamarans will be delivered to each of the three cities. Currently, Ayodhya and Kashi have received one catamaran each, with a capacity of 50 passengers. The Tourism Corporation has requested that the next batch of catamarans be open-air, with a deck, pantry, toilets and other amenities to ensure a comfortable journey for tourists.
The introduction of these boats is part of a broader effort to develop water tourism in the state. Recently, Prayagraj also received two mini cruise boats, each with a capacity of 30 passengers, and six motor boats, each with a capacity of six tourists. All the boats, including two rescue boats, are expected to be operational after the monsoon season.
Uttar Pradesh Minister for Tourism and Culture Jaiveer Singh highlighted the efforts being made by the state to expand its tourism offering. Last year, over 480 million tourists visited Uttar Pradesh, attracted by its religious, spiritual and eco-tourism sites. Singh highlighted the state’s commitment to new tourism projects, including rural tourism, agro-tourism and, in particular, water sports.
Mukesh Kumar Meshram, Principal Secretary, Department of Tourism and Culture, also highlighted the state’s ambitious vision for water tourism. “The Uttar Pradesh State Waterways Authority was set up to capitalise on our vast river systems, including the Ganga, which flows through 27 districts from Bijnore to Ballia,” Meshram said. “This initiative is eco-friendly, sustainable and economically viable, making the best use of our natural resources.”
With these new plans, Uttar Pradesh is set to become a major destination for water tourism. Visitors will soon be able to enjoy its beautiful and spiritual landscapes from the water. The addition of boat rides in Ayodhya, Mathura and Kashi is a major step forward in the state’s growing tourism scene.
