Sindhudurg: A 35-foot statue of the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj collapsed on Monday in MaharashtraSindhudurg district. It is noteworthy that the statue was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year. The incident allegedly took place around 1:00 pm Rajkot Fort in Malvan.

Following the information, senior officials rushed to the scene. There are no reports of injuries as a result of the incident.

Here is the video:

Experts will ascertain the exact cause of the collapse, but the district has witnessed heavy rains and gusty winds for the past two to three days, an official was quoted as saying by PTI. PM Modi had inaugurated the statue on December 4 last year on the occasion of Navy Day. He also participated in the celebrations at the fort.

The opposition lashed out at the BJP-led Mahayuti government in the state. NCP (SP) state president and former minister Jayant Patil said, “The state government is responsible for the collapse as it did not take adequate measures. The government paid little attention to the quality of work. It was only focused on holding an event where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was invited to inaugurate the statue. This Maharashtra government is only issuing new tenders, accepting orders and awarding contracts accordingly.”

Shiv Sena (UBT) legislator Vaibhav Naik also criticised the state government for the alleged poor quality of work.

“The state government may try to evade its responsibility. Those responsible for the construction and erection of the statue must be thoroughly investigated,” he said.

Maharashtra Minister Deepak Kesarkar said, “I don’t have all the details about the incident. However, it is important to note that Public Works Minister Ravindra Chavan, also the guardian minister of Sindhudurg district, has said that a thorough inquiry will be conducted into the matter.” A new statue will be built at the same spot, the minister said.
