Vinesh Phogat left the Olympic Village on Monday (August 12), a day after the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics Meanwhile, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is still awaiting a verdict in her case. The verdict is expected to be announced on Tuesday (August 13) at 21:30 IST, after multiple delays.
A report by India today She has now claimed that Phogat is feeling better and has started eating, but is still not speaking to anyone following her heartbreaking disqualification from the Paris 2024 Olympics. The 29-year-old is expected to return to India and land in New Delhi in the coming days.
Phogat had created history at the 2024 Paris Olympics by becoming the first Indian wrestler to reach an Olympic final. The three-time Commonwealth Games champion was assured of her first Olympic medal but was disqualified from the competition just hours before her gold medal clash.
The great Indian wrestler of today would have become the second Indian wrestler to win an Olympic medal after Sakshi Malik and would have had a chance to become India’s first female Olympic champion. However, fate took a tragic turn for her after she missed the weigh-in on the second day by 100 grams.
Phogat was clearly devastated by the sequence of events and announced her retirement from the sport less than 24 hours after being disqualified. Phogat and her support team tried every measure possible to ensure she could meet the criteria throughout the night after her semi-final, but were unsuccessful.
Phogat has filed an appeal with the CAS and has asked for a joint silver medal. India won six medals (1 silver, 5 bronze) at the Paris 2024 Olympics and if the appeal is successful, the country will get its seventh medal, which will mean it will equal its best Olympic record achieved at Tokyo 2021.
Phogat had successfully passed the weigh-in on the first day of her three bouts. She made history in the round of 16 by defeating world number one Yui Susaki, who had never lost an international bout in her career, and won the Tokyo Olympic gold without dropping a single point.
