On this day, August 18, 16 years ago, Virat Kohli He made his debut for the Indian team in 2008 against Sri Lanka. The ODI match was held in Dambulla and although Virat could only score 12 runs when he came on to open alongside Gautama GambhirKohli managed to score 159 runs in five games in his first series.
Gambhir, who is now the head coach of the Indian team in 2019, recalled Virat Kohli’s debut and the way he batted in the nets. Gautam felt that there is enormous talent in the lad. Both of them hailed from Delhi and have had their share of ups and downs since then.
When Gautam Gambhir was announced as the head coach of the Indian team, a lot of questions arose about his relationship with Virat Kohli. However, the veteran had made it clear that their relationship was not made for TRP.
The newly appointed coach urged Virat to play in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka and the legend obliged. On the day Kohli completed 16 years in international cricket, Star Sports shared a clip from 2019 in which Gautam Gambhir was seen praising the legendary batsman.
“When he made his debut for Sri Lanka in the first ODI, he was quickly dismissed but the way he batted in the nets I knew he had the potential to represent India for many years to come, he was so talented it was just a matter of time,” Gambhir said.
“Great attitude, good temperament, he knew how to fight to win matches for his team. In his initial days with the Indian team, the way he won matches for India was a very positive thing,” GG added.
Despite their differences, both made peace and were seen laughing during the ODI series against Sri Lanka, and their reunion melted the hearts of all Indian fans.
