Visa partners with Skill India to train 20,000 youth for the tourism industry

The Tourism and Hospitality Skills Council (THSC), under the Ministry of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Visa, a world leader in digital payments.

The three-year partnership, worth up to $1 million, aims to train at least 20,000 Indian youth in tourism-related skills.

The initiative was formalized in the presence of Shri Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Minister of State for Education, Government of India.

Focus on improving the tourist service experience

The partnership between Visa and THSC builds on Visa’s ongoing collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism.

The aim is to train youth in 10 states of India including Assam, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and West Bengal to improve the overall service experience for tourists.

The programme will focus on essential roles within the national tourism industry, such as tour guides, customer service executives, naturalists and tandem paragliding pilots.

“This partnership with Visa is a critical step towards realising and unleashing that potential, equipping our youth with the skills to thrive in the tourism sector and making India a world-class tourist destination,” said Minister Jayant Chaudhary.

Strengthening India’s tourism landscape

Visa has been actively involved in strengthening India’s tourism landscape through its deep expertise in data and analytics.

The company has contributed to increasing inbound tourism by providing valuable data and information to the Ministry of Tourism, facilitating the promotion of India’s diverse destinations on the global stage.

Kelly Mahon Tullier, Vice President and Chief People and Corporate Affairs Officer at Visa, said: “By equipping the country’s youth with the skills needed to thrive in the tourism industry, we aim to not only increase their employment prospects but also enhance the overall experience of tourists visiting India.”
