Volvo unveils refreshed XC90 with new hybrid options, advanced technology and new design

Technological advances inside: The XC90’s interior has received significant updates, especially in its technological features. It now features a 14.5-inch vertical touchscreen, controlled by Volvo’s Google-based infotainment system. This system integrates seamlessly with Google services such as Maps, Assistant and Play Store.

Enhanced Safety Features: One of the key enhancements to the new XC90 is its advanced LiDAR-based surround-view detection system. This system includes eight cameras and a radar, significantly improving safety and driver assistance capabilities.

Hybrid engine options: The facelifted XC90 continues to offer hybrid powertrains. The T8 plug-in hybrid model combines a 310 PS turbocharged petrol engine with a 145 PS electric motor. This configuration provides an electric-only range of up to 70 km. The 14.7 kWh battery can be fully charged in around three hours using an AC fast charger.

Mild hybrid variants: In addition to the plug-in hybrid, the XC90 is available with two mild-hybrid options. The basic B5 variant produces 250 PS, while the B6 variant, equipped with an electric supercharger, offers 300 PS. Both mild-hybrid engines use the Miller combustion cycle to optimise fuel efficiency: the B5 achieves a fuel consumption of 14 km/l and the B6 13.5 km/l.

Mechanical improvements: The XC90’s ride quality has been improved with additional sound insulation and a revised suspension system. The new suspension setup includes a double-wishbone arrangement at the front and frequency-selective damping. An optional electronically controlled air suspension system is available, which scans the road surface 500 times per second to improve ride comfort and stability.

Interior and exterior changes: The facelifted XC90 features several updates to both its exterior and interior. The exterior now includes a revised engine grille and new wheel options ranging from 20 to 22 inches. The taillights have also been redesigned. Inside, the cabin has been refreshed with a new horizontal layout, textured materials and an 11.2-inch touchscreen.

Seats and cargo space: The XC90 continues to offer flexible seating configurations, including five-, six- or seven-seat options. Cargo capacity behind the second row is 680 litres in mild hybrids and 640 litres in the plug-in hybrid. With the third row of seats in use, cargo space is reduced to 302 litres in mild hybrids and 262 litres in the plug-in hybrid.

EX90: Volvo’s electric future: The new EX90 represents Volvo’s latest entry into the electric SUV market. It features a three-row seating arrangement and is powered by a 111 kWh battery, offering a WLTP range of up to 600 km on a single charge.

India launch prospects: Production of the facelifted XC90 is set to begin later this year, with initial deliveries in select international markets expected before the end of 2024. While there is no official confirmation on an India launch, it is likely that the facelifted XC90 will be introduced in the Indian market. The current model, priced at around ₹1 crore (ex-showroom), it competes against models like the BMW X5, Mercedes GLE and Audi Q7.
