Waffle House Chairman and CEO Walt Ehmer Dies

Walt Ehmer, president and CEO of Waffle House, has died at the age of 58 after battling a long illness, according to the restaurant chain’s board of directors.

Ehmer had a long history with Atlanta: he served on the board of directors of the Atlanta Police Foundation and an alumnus of Georgia Tech University, where he served on the Advisory Council and as President of the Board of Directors of its Alumni Association from 2012 to 2013. He joined Norcross-based Waffle House 32 years ago in 1992, becoming president in 2006 and adding the titles of CEO and president in 2012.

“I am saddened to learn of the passing of Walt Ehmer, CEO of Waffle House and proud Georgia Tech alumnus. His leadership, dedication and warmth touched the lives of many people, both within the Waffle House family and beyond,” Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said in a news release Sunday morning. “He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy. My thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time. I hope they find comfort in his lasting impact and the lasting mark he left on so many people.”

“The entire Waffle House family will miss him dearly,” an official statement from Waffle House added Sunday afternoon. “For now, we know that you all join us in extending our deepest condolences to Walt’s family. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Founded in Atlanta, the 24-hour restaurant chain Waffle House opened its doors in 1955 and has more than 1,900 locations nationwide.
