Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday said he is proud of every hockey player no matter which state he is from, noting that every athlete is first an Indian and a representative of the entire country.

According to an official statement, the Prime Minister interacted with the officials of Hockey India at his official residence at 5 Kalidas Marg on the eve of the 14th Hockey India Congress.

Welcoming the Hockey India officials, the Prime Minister said it was very important that the 14th Hockey India Congress was held in Uttar Pradesh.

“We are proud of every player, no matter which state he is from. The player is first and foremost an Indian and represents the entire country,” he said.

Hockey India officials are expected to prepare the best hockey team for the country in line with world standards, the statement said.

“We have to offer the players the best facilities. We have to create a sense of belonging in them,” he said.

Adityanath said the state government is ready to support Hockey India in the drive to encourage players.

Hockey India should work with the state sports department on possibilities of building hockey stadiums in various districts, he said.

According to the statement, the Chief Minister said, “Hockey is the national sport of India. Therefore, every Indian has an affinity towards hockey and a sense of respect for hockey players and people associated with Hockey India.”

Uttar Pradesh has been the most fertile ground for the Indian hockey team. Hockey genius Major Dhyanchand was born in Uttar Pradesh, he recalled.

The Prime Minister also presented ODOP (One District-One Product) to the officials of Hockey India.
