New Delhi: Chief Minister of Telangana Revanth Reddy On Friday, he apologised for his comments regarding the bail granted to Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha in Delhi. alcohol policy case. Reddy “unconditionally expressed” his regret after the Supreme Court reprimanded him for his comments about a “deal” between the BJP and the BRS to secure Kavitha’s bail.
In a post on X, Reddy said he has “highest esteem and full faith” in the Indian judiciary and added that the remarks attributed to him were taken out of context. “I have unconditional respect and highest regard for the judiciary and its independence. As a firm believer in the Constitution of India and its ethos, I have held and continue to hold the judiciary in the highest regard,” the Congress leader said.
On Thursday, a three-judge bench, comprising Justices BR Gavai, PK Mishra and KV Viswanathan, expressed strong disapproval of Reddy’s comments, which implied an alleged political fix to secure Kavitha’s release. Justice Gavai criticised the Prime Minister’s remarks, saying they could erode public confidence in the judicial process. “Have you read what (he) said… I have just read… such statements by a Prime Minister could rightly create apprehension,” Justice Gavai said.
The court said the Supreme Court acts independently and is not influenced by political criticism or comments. “Shall we pass our resolution after consulting any political party? This (demand) should be the basis for transfer of the case… we are performing our duty according to our conscience and oath…” the court said.
Justice Viswanathan noted that respect for institutions is essential and said such statements by a high-ranking official undermine this respect. “Should a person holding a constitutional office make such statements? There should be mutual respect (between politicians and judges)… How can anyone say that we are giving orders for political reasons?” the bench said. “If you do not respect us, we will refer your judgment elsewhere.”
On Tuesday, Revanth Reddy questioned the speed with which Kavitha was granted bail, comparing it to the prolonged detention of other political figures like Manish Sisodia and Arvind Kejriwal. He further claimed that Kavitha’s bail could be linked to an alleged political deal between the BRS and the BJP, claiming that this deal influenced the quick judicial outcome.
The Supreme Court’s comments came as the court was also taking up a petition seeking transfer of the money-for-votes trial involving Reddy to Bhopal, citing fears of bias and obstruction of justice in the current jurisdiction.
BJP spokesperson Rachana Reddy responded to the court’s rebuke, condemning Revanth Reddy’s comments and accusing the Congress party of spreading misinformation. “How dare CM Revanth Reddy comment on Supreme Court decisions without understanding the law and procedure? This exposes the Congress’ attempts to mislead the public. The Supreme Court has rightly and firmly punished Revanth Reddy,” Rachana said.
