WFI President Sanjay Singh asks CGF not to remove wrestling from CWG 2026 roster, but doesn’t hold out much hope

Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Sanjay Singh on Tuesday urged the Commonwealth Games Federation to keep the sport on the list for the 2026 CWGs but also admitted that potential hosts Scotland might not budge.

India is one of the most successful wrestling nations in CWG, having won 114 medals in the sport till the 2022 edition.

Wrestling has been part of the CWG program for the past three editions. The last time wrestling was not present was in 2006, when it was replaced by basketball. Before that, wrestling was removed from the program in 1998 to add bowling.

The Scottish capital Glasgow will host the 2026 Commonwealth Games after Victoria pulled out, citing the huge cost of staging the marquee event.

“I met CGF President Chris Jenkins and CGF CEO Katie Sadleir during the NSF meeting with the Commonwealth Games Federation. We told them how important it is for India and other nations to have wrestling on the Commonwealth Games roster. They said Scotland will have the final say,” Singh told PTI.

“Wrestling is not very popular in the UK. England and Scotland don’t send many wrestlers, so the chances of it staying are not very high. We were told that the list will only have 10 or 11 sports and that Scotland will make the final decision,” he added.

The last edition in Birmingham in 2022 featured 20 sports and India won 61 medals, of which 12 were won by wrestlers.

Of the 22 gold medals won by India, wrestling contributed six, the most among all sports, followed by table tennis (4) and boxing (3).

The 2026 Commonwealth Games were due to be held in several Victorian cities, but the Australian state made an unexpected withdrawal in July 2023, citing a sharp increase in projected spending.

However, shooting will return to the list of disciplines at the Commonwealth Games after being left off the Birmingham programme.
