Liam Payne’s preliminary autopsy report has confirmed that the cause of his death was multiple trauma, along with internal and external injuries that caused bleeding, a day after the singer died at the age of 31.
Earlier this week, the former One Direction member died after falling from the third floor of a hotel balcony in Argentina. The autopsy report, according to Argentina’s National Prosecutor’s Office, gives details of how Payne sheds light on the injuries he suffered before his death.
How did Liam die?
According to a statement from the Emergency Medical Care System, following Payne’s death, “British musician Liam James Payne, composer and guitarist, former member of the band One Direction, died today after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Palermo. ”the statement said. “In the afternoon, police personnel from Precinct 14B were directed to the hotel through a 911 call reporting an aggressive man who could be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”
The call reportedly occurred just before Payne fell from the balcony, according to prosecutors. The report, however, did not name Payne. “He had jumped from the balcony of his room,” a statement from the Buenos Aires Ministry of Security told the Associated Press, adding that he had “extremely serious injuries” and was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to media outlets, after his death “a series of substances were seized in the musician’s room that would prove a previous situation of alcohol and drug consumption,” the prosecutor’s statement said.
Payne had a history of addiction before his death.
In addition to multiple traumatic injuries, he also suffered severe internal and external bleeding due to the fall, according to the prosecutor’s statement. Forensic experts also found a total of 25 injuries that they said were compatible with those caused by a fall from a height. Furthermore, his brain and skull injuries, also known as craniocerebral injuries, were sufficiently adequate to cause death.
The statement adds that internal and external hemorrhages in his skull, chest, abdomen and extremities caused his final death.
And since there were no defensive injuries to his body, forensics say they believe all of the injuries to his body were vital and occurred at the same time, meaning there was no third-party intervention. Additionally, the position of Payne’s body suggested that “he did not adopt a reflexive posture to protect himself and that he may have fallen into a state of semi-or complete unconsciousness,” the report added.
