New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping will come face to face at the BRICS summit in the Russian city of Kazan next week as both leaders will attend the conclave. Prime Minister Modi will be on a two-day visit to Kazan starting Tuesday to attend the summit following an invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday.
As planned, the prime minister will fly to Kazan on Tuesday morning. He is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Putin on the same day, hours after disembarking from the plane. Afterwards, he is supposed to hold multiple bilateral meetings with leaders of other BRICS member countries.
Why is Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Russia important?
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said India plays a vital role in the BRICS, bringing significant value, particularly in sectors such as economic growth, sustainable development and global governance reforms. Misri made the remarks while addressing a press conference regarding Prime Minister Modi’s upcoming visit to Russia for the 16th BRICS summit. Addressing the briefing, Misri said: “The Prime Minister will leave tomorrow for Kazan to attend the 16th BRICS Summit at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The theme of this BRICS edition is Strengthening multilateralism for sustainable development. and fair global security.
He added: “As you know, India is a founding member of the BRICS and has participated in all its activities, initiatives and commitments since its inception. India brings great value to the BRICS and its contributions have played a vital role in shaping of BRICS efforts in areas such as economic growth, sustainable development and global governance reforms.
BRICS Summit during multiple wars
Misri further stated that the country sees the BRICS as a key expression of global multipolarity. “We attach great importance to our participation and activities within the BRICS forum, as we consider it a key expression of global multipolarity. BRICS also serves as a vital platform for us to address a variety of global challenges while contributing to shaping a fairer, more exclusive and open international order,” Misri said.
Explaining the summit schedule, Misri said: “This is the first summit to take place after the first BRICS expansion last year in Johannesburg. The summit begins on October 22. The main day of the summit is October 23 and there are two main sessions, a closed plenary session in the morning followed by an open plenary session in the afternoon dedicated to the main theme of the summit.” He added: “The leaders are also expected to adopt the Kazan Declaration, which will mark the way forward for the BRICS. This document is currently being negotiated in Kazan. The summit will end on October 24. However, the prime minister will return on October 23.
Although the foreign secretary did not mention whether Prime Minister Modi will advocate for peace in the Ukraine war, it is clear from his previous visit to Moscow and kyiv in the last two months that he would advocate for the early return of peace in the region .
PM Modi to hold multiple bilateral meetings
On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Modi is expected to hold some bilateral meetings.
