KEY POINTS
- Ian Zelbo once described himself as a “walking advertisement” for Apple, because he wore its products from head to toe.
- After 9 years of owning various Apple Watch models, the Californian is back to sporting his analog Tudor.
- Zelbo found the smartwatch features to be of little use in his life and the notifications only added to his frustration.
By his own admission, the tech nerd was once a “walking Apple advertisement,” equipped with an iPhone in his hand, an Apple Watch on his wrist and listening to music and podcasts with AirPods Max, even wearing an Apple Park T-shirt.
However, things changed last year when Zelbo found himself recommending against buying the $800 Apple Watch Ultra, in response to someone’s tweet.
He said the device was not worth its price and that its features were “more than unnecessary.”
In August 2023, he became fed up with Apple Watches, boldly declaring that he would not buy another one the following month.
That’s when the disappointment began.
Zelbo was overwhelmed by notifications about his physical activity and online interactions. On one occasion, the watch sounded its alarm at full volume, startling him from his sleep. That was probably the final straw for the young man, as two months later he began wearing his analog watch for good.
