Why did Google exclude popular YouTuber Arun Maini from the Pixel 9 launch event?

Arun Maini, who runs the YouTube channel “Mrwhosetheboss” with over 19 million subscribers, took to social media platform X to slam Google for not inviting him to the Pixel 9 launch event. Maini had previously reviewed the latest-generation Pixel devices and offered critical feedback.

Maini’s YouTube channel is known for tech news, latest gadgets, smartphone reviews, and more. His subscribers were eagerly waiting for his review of the latest Google Pixel 9 series but were disappointed.

In his viral post, Maini noted that despite reaching out to multiple contacts at Google, he did not receive an invite, which he attributed to his critical review of the latest-generation Pixel devices.

The YouTuber posted the following: “For those asking for our Google Pixel review… We did not receive an invite to the Google Pixel event this year. We reached out to several different Google contacts and did not hear back. We were critical of the last generation Pixel devices, but that shouldn’t be a reason not to be included in this year’s launch. I stand by my criticisms, and if anything it should be seen as an opportunity to improve the product and then prove it by letting us test it in person. @madebygoogle Can you help me out please?”

Maini stressed that he stands by his criticisms and that his reviews should be seen as an opportunity to improve the product.

Internet users’ reactions to X

The internet reacted strongly to his post, which has garnered over 1.7 million views and 25,000 likes on X, with many comments in favour. One user commented: “So @Google blacklists reviewers too. That’s embarrassing man.”

However, Maini also received some criticism. One comment read: “Well I saw your review of the Pixel 8 Pro and a lot of the things you said were unjustified… You wanted attention and didn’t give Google all the credit. Yes, their Pixels since the 6/6 Pro weren’t the best but they are still good for the value. So I understand why Google didn’t invite you this time.”

Another user also defended Google’s decision: “Why should Google care when their Pixel reviews have been filled with inconsistencies and incorrect information since the 6 series? I’m glad Google is possibly starting to weed out creators who aren’t providing any service to consumers. It’s not about the reviews being negative, Google included a lot of creators who don’t have generally positive opinions about their products. It’s about the quality of the information and comparisons made. I also find it odd that they’re calling them out like this. If you’re a creator and you don’t get an invite to a product launch, then just wait for the product to come out like the rest of us. Sure you can share what happened, but it’s weird to beg Google to help you out with this.”

Google unveiled its latest advances in artificial intelligence and hardware at the ninth annual Made by Google event on August 13 in Mountain View, California.
