The mood in the United States is currently charged but out of control, courtesy of the presidential election season finally coming to a close. The first official presidential debate between Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris concluded last night, with many choosing Kamala as the unofficial victor in the verbal duel. Taylor Swift, for one, agrees with this. So much so that she has made her loyalty to the first-time presidential candidate very clear, without beating around the bush.
In a lengthy, no-holds-barred post, Taylor stated without mincing words that she would, in fact, be voting for Kamala. Taylor’s piece, whose comments have been restricted for obvious reasons, was published shortly after the presidential debate ended, which appears to be what motivated the singer to freely express her political stance. “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for rights and causes that I believe need a warrior to stand up for them. I think she’s a talented, steady-handed leader and I think we can accomplish so much more in this country if we’re guided by calm and not chaos,” read one excerpt. She even expressed how impressed she was with Kamala’s choice of Tim Walz as her running mate, considering his long-standing work on behalf of LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right over her body. In the note, Taylor also briefly addressed the fiasco she was embroiled in when a misleading AI-generated video of her endorsing Trump was officially circulated.
Many have praised Taylor’s clear stance, including on talk shows and news outlets. The last word Lawrence O’Donnell, who called it “the biggest celebrity endorsement I’ve ever seen.” Although not exactly a fan of celebrity endorsements, he added: “The timing is absolutely exquisite, the wording is impeccable. For someone who has never been impressed by a celebrity endorsement, this is perfect and powerful.”
One thing that has left some a little confused, however, is why she decided to sign off her strongly worded open letter with the moniker “the childless cat lady.” For the uninitiated, this was a conscious decision and a very clever clapback, which only further ratified the point Taylor was trying to make, albeit in a blatant way.
Why does Taylor Swift call herself a “childless cat lady”?
In 2021, when Trump was in the midst of his second presidential campaign (which ultimately swung in favor of Democratic nominee Joe Biden and his vice presidential nominee Kamala), his running mate JD Vance had made some unparliamentary comments regarding the “type” of women who were key figures in the Democratic nexus. Even going so far as to name-drop Kamala and AOC, Vance claimed that America was being run over by Democrats: “a bunch of childless women who are miserable with their own lives and the choices they’ve made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too.” In the explosive 2021 interview with Fox News host Tucker Carlson, Vance reaffirmed his statement, adding: “It’s a basic fact: If you look at Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, AOC, the entire future of the Democrats is controlled by people without children… And how does it make sense that we’ve handed our country over to people who really have no direct interest in it?”
Not only that, Vance seems to have a certain morbid fascination with promoting the cat lady issue. In a response to American economist Paul Krugman’s opinion on birtherism and Trump in 2021, Vance casually replied: “Paul Krugman is one of the many weird cat ladies who have too much power in our country. We should change this.”
Back to Taylor, she loves to keep receipts. She is a proud cat lover who doesn’t have children and she signed her sponsorship post with just that.
