Why Ferrari pulled out of the race to sign Adrian Newey

Legendary Formula 1 car designer Adrian Newey has recently announced that he will be leaving Red Bull Racing after spending two seasons with the team. When it was announced that he would become a free agent, Ferrari was supposed to be the front-runner to land the Brit, but that has not been the case as it is now all but confirmed that Adrian Newey will be joining Aston Martin and an official announcement can be expected any day now. The deal with Aston Martin is said to be worth around $100 million over three seasons.

The reason why Ferrari pulled out of the race to sign Newey has now been revealed.

Vasseur avoids a bidding war

Ferrari boss Fred Vassuer was given a substantial budget to try and secure the signature of the legendary F1 designer, but Vassuer did not want to enter into a bidding war with Aston Martin, according to a report by Autosport. With Ferrari unwilling to negotiate on such substantial terms and a move to McLaren having been ruled out, it paved the way for Aston Martin to secure his signature.

Aston Martin has not had a good season in 2024 as they are currently a mid-table team and are struggling to get on the podium, unlike last year. Even after the 2024 setback, Aston Martin is eager to become the leading team in Formula One and the signing of Adrian Newey definitely helps in that.

Stroll’s relationship with Newey

Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll recently spoke about his relationship with Adrian Newey.

“Adrian and I have been talking not just for months, but for years,” Stroll told Bloomberg.

“Adrian is clearly the most talented and gifted figure in Formula 1, given his track record and history, as well as being a true gentleman.

“I would be very excited to have Adrian join our team as I think every other Formula 1 team on the grid would feel exactly the same.”
