New Delhi: General Motors GM is laying off more than 1,000 employees worldwide, the company confirmed Monday. Among those employees are about 600 positions at GM’s technology campus near Detroit.

“As we build GM’s future, we must simplify for speed and excellence, make bold decisions and prioritize investments that will have the greatest impact,” GM said in a statement to CNBC.

The layoffs, which affected about 1.3 percent of GM’s global workforce of 76,000 last year, primarily affect the company’s U.S. operations. The affected employees were informed Monday morning.

“We are grateful to those who helped establish a strong foundation that positions GM to lead into the future,” the automaker said.

Notably, the job cuts come after a change in leadership following the departure of former Apple executive Mike Abbott in March due to health reasons.

The division is currently led by executives Baris Cetinok and Dave Richardson.

The job cuts at GM follow the company’s efforts to cut costs amid concerns of a potential industry slowdown and substantial investments in electric and software-defined vehicles.

GM has recently had software issues with its Chevrolet Blazer EV, including problems with infotainment screens and charging errors. A stop-sales order issued last December was lifted in March. The layoffs also follow the cancellation of GM’s “Ultra Cruise” program in January, which was merged with the Super Cruise team. Despite these challenges, GM remains committed to expanding its hands-free driving system, with the goal of improving its capabilities by the end of 2025.
