New Delhi: The US Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday refused to confirm any possible meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former US President Donald Trump during his visit to the US. Earlier this week, Trump claimed that Prime Minister Modi will meet him next week during his upcoming three-day visit to the US.

In his first public appearance since the apparent assassination attempt, Trump said Tuesday that Modi would meet with him next week when he is in the United States. “So when India, which is a country that commits a lot of abuses, he (Modi) will come to meet with me next week, and Modi is fantastic. I mean, a fantastic man. A lot of these leaders are fantastic,” Trump said.

However, when asked about the same during a special briefing by the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri did not confirm it but said, “There are many meetings with the Prime Minister at the moment which we are trying to arrange. At this stage, I will not be able to tell you about any specific meeting, whether the meeting has been fixed or not.” He, however, said that the ministry is looking from all angles at how much time the Prime Minister has and with whom he might hold meetings. “We will keep you informed about the meetings,” Misri added.

Misri’s remarks came during a briefing by the Ministry of External Affairs on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US for the upcoming Quad summit. Explaining the events that will take place in the US during PM Modi’s visit, Misri said, “Prime Minister Modi will be visiting the US from September 21 to 23. This visit combines very important aspects. It has a very important bilateral aspect, very important plurilateral aspects and an equally important multilateral aspect. There will be interaction with a range of foreign partners at the Prime Ministerial level. There will be interaction with the large Indian diaspora in the US and there will be engagement with a number of business and industrial leaders, among others.”

He added, “The Prime Minister’s first talk will be in Wilmington, Delaware, which is the hometown of President Joe Biden. That is also the venue for this sixth Quad summit…” Misri further informed that from Wilmington, the Prime Minister will travel to New York, to attend the Future Summit. He said, “He (PM Modi) will also have a number of engagements over these three days. On September 21, there will be a Quad summit; the bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the Quad summit. A special event on the sidelines of the Quad summit will be the Cancer Moonshot event. On September 22, the Prime Minister will have an interaction with the Indian diaspora. This is being organised by the community in Long Island, New York…”
