Reacting to the death of an EY employee allegedly due to “overwork”, Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said action will be taken based on the facts revealed in the investigation.

Mansukh Mandaviya said, “Whether it is an administrative employee or any worker, when a citizen of the country dies, it is natural that we feel sad about it. The matter is being investigated and action will be taken based on the facts revealed in the investigation.”

Ernst & Young (EY) earlier issued a statement expressing its deep sadness at the tragic passing of the 26-year-old certified public accountant, who died on July 20 due to suspected work-related stress.

The statement comes after a heartbreaking letter written by the victim’s mother went viral on social media, alleging that EY’s work culture and excessive workload contributed to her daughter’s death.

In the letter, her mother detailed the victim’s struggles with anxiety, insomnia and stress due to an overwhelming workload, citing instances where her manager prioritized work over employee well-being.

EY’s response acknowledged the victim’s brief tenure at the company and expressed condolences to the grieving family.

Commenting on the allegations, EY said: “We are taking the family’s correspondence with utmost seriousness and humility. We attach utmost importance to the well-being of all employees and will continue to look for ways to improve and provide a healthy workplace for our 100,000 people across EY member firms in India.”

The firm said it has provided assistance to the family and will continue to do so.

The incident has sparked a national debate about work-life balance, mental health and corporate responsibility.
