A Congress leader on Sunday said winnability would be the main criterion for seat-sharing among MVA constituencies for the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections and it would be resolved amicably at the earliest.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), comprising the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (SP), is already in election and campaign mode, having held a joint meeting of its office-bearers on August 16, state Congress working president Naseem Khan told PTI.

“The possibility of winning would be the basis for sharing seats between the allies and it will be resolved amicably as soon as possible,” he said.

“The results of the Lok Sabha elections are sure to be repeated in the assembly elections,” Khan said, expressing confidence in the MVA’s victory.

He claimed that false promises and a false narrative of the ruling ‘Mahayuti’ (comprising the Shiv Sena, BJP and NCP) have been exposed.

“During his tenure, development has declined and corruption has increased. The state government has worked to weaken Mumbai and Maharashtra and farmer suicides have increased,” he said.

People are angry with the government, Khan said.

MVA voters have declared that they will contest the Maharashtra Assembly elections together.

A meeting of MVA allies was held on August 16 where Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray demanded that the alliance declare its chief ministerial face in advance without waiting for the result of each constituent in the assembly elections scheduled for October-November.

The MVA defeated the Mahayuti alliance in the Lok Sabha elections held earlier this year by winning 30 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra, while the BJP lost 14 constituencies out of the 23 it won in 2019.

On August 20, NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar and Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray will participate in a programme to be organised by the state Congress in Mumbai to mark the birth anniversary of late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge will also attend the programme, which will be held at the Shanmukhananda Hall here.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, who was invited to the event, will not be able to attend due to prior commitments, Khan said.

Mumbai is the hometown of Rajiv Gandhi, who ushered in the information technology and telecom revolution and lowered the voting age to 18, said Khan, who was recently nominated as a special invitee to the Congress Working Committee (CWC).
