Wisconsin’s health department has recalled eggs following a salmonella outbreak that has affected more than 60 people in nine states. Officials said 42 people in the midwestern state, where the eggs are believed to have been sold, were among those infected with salmonella.
“The eggs were distributed in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan through retail stores and food service distributors,” the department said in a statement. “The recall includes all types of eggs, including conventional, cage-free, organic and non-GMO, carton sizes and expiration dates in packages labeled Milo’s Poultry Farms or Tony’s Fresh Market.”
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed on its website that 65 people in several states have been infected with a strain of salmonella. The bacterial infection causes diarrhea, fever and stomach pain. The states affected are Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Virginia, Colorado, Utah and California, the agency said.
The CDC said the egg recall was conducted by Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC of Bonduel, Wisconsin.
“People who have purchased the recalled eggs are advised not to eat or cook with them and to throw them away. Restaurants should not sell or serve the recalled eggs,” the Wisconsin health department notice said.
New measures announced to curb salmonella
In July, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced new measures to curb salmonella in poultry products. The proposed directive required poultry companies to keep salmonella levels below a certain threshold and test for the presence of six particularly harmful forms of the bacteria, three found in turkey and three in chicken. Bacteria exceeding the proposed standard and identification of any of the strains would prevent the poultry from being sold and subject the products to recall.
According to the CDC, salmonella causes more than 1.35 million infections a year in the country, mostly through food, and about 420 deaths. The Department of Agriculture estimates there are 125,000 chicken infections and 43,000 turkey infections each year.

According to experts, salmonella poisoning causes diarrhea, stomach pains, and a severe form of gastroenteritis, which is a common form of bacterial food poisoning in the US. Also known as salmonellosis, it occurs due to different forms of Salmonella bacteria, such as typhoid fever.
Doctors say Salmonella Bacteria invade and destroy the cells lining the intestines, making it difficult for the body to absorb water, which can lead to stomach cramps.

According to doctors, salmonella symptoms appear between a few hours and a few days after exposure to Salmonella Bacteria. Some of them are:
- Diarrhea
- High fever
- Stomach aches
- Nausea and vomiting
- Severe headache
How does salmonella spread??
According to experts, the most common way to contract salmonella is through undercooked food or improper preparation of the food:
- Eating raw or undercooked meat, poultry, seafood or eggs
- Eating contaminated fruits and vegetables
- Drinking contaminated water or unpasteurized milk
- Not washing hands while preparing and eating food
- You can also get salmonella infection from animals and people infected with Salmonella bacteria
