Residents in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh have heaved a sigh of relief after the capture of a wolf that killed at least eight people, including seven children and a woman. In a recent incident, the animal killed a baby on Tuesday night.

On Thursday, the Forest Department managed to capture the wolf, which was part of the pack of six animals, by using firecrackers and forcing it to follow a certain path. They then tried to tranquilize it and take it to a zoo.

Latest technologies implemented to capture wolves

The forest department used the latest technologies to trap wolves using drone cameras and drone thermal mapping techniques. The officials received approval from the chief forester to tranquilise the animals.

Authorities issued a statement saying that four wolves have been captured so far, but the total number of wolves in the region is still uncertain.

Principal chief forest officer (wildlife) Sanjay Srivastava said 16 teams are being deployed to capture the wolves and 12 district officers are also stationed here.

“Additional Chief Conservator of Forests Renu Singh will remain at the spot until the remaining wolves are captured,” he added.

What did Bahraich’s DM say?

Monika Rani, district magistrate of Baharaich, said that gates are being installed in houses that do not have them. Rani also said that night patrols are being carried out and ASHA workers are also working to create awareness among people.

An official statement said UP CM Yogi Adityanath is closely monitoring ‘Operation Bhediya’ while Chief Minister Arun Saxena met the affected families in the district.

Saxena assured people that all the wolves will be caught soon as the Forest Department is working tirelessly.

“The district administration has given an ex-gratia payment of Rs 500,000 each to the kin of the four deceased persons. Payments to the families of the remaining victims will be processed soon,” the statement said.

The minister also assured that the department is on full alert and making all possible efforts to capture the remaining wolves.

Saxena urged people to avoid sleeping outdoors at night and to keep children indoors. He also said people should make sure the door is closed before going to sleep. He also asked residents to go out in groups carrying sticks to protect themselves.
