A woman has sparked a debate on social media after claiming she was sent home from a Job interview for wearing shorts, which the recruiter deemed inappropriate. The job applicant, named Tyreshia, defended her choice of clothing, stating that she did nothing wrong. Tyreshia shared a video of her outfit on TikTok, expressing frustration and saying that the interviewShe was turned down solely because of the way she was dressed. Although she was given the option to change and come back for the interview, Tyreshia refused on principle.
“They put a dress code on me for an interview and then they decided to reschedule the interview with me for tomorrow,” she explained in her video. “But before they rescheduled it, the lady asked me if I wanted to come back, change and come back. And I said no.”
The video quickly went viral, garnering 34 million views on TikTok and spreading to X (formerly known as Twitter). The incident sparked a massive backlash, with many users criticizing Tyreshia’s choice of outfit for a job interview.
Several people weighed in and many agreed with the recruiter and stated that shorts were not appropriate attire for an interview.
“What’s appropriate for the office and what’s appropriate for an interview are two different things. She just learned that lesson,” wrote one X user. “Don’t wear shorts to an interview people. What are we doing?” added another.
“If she had come to an interview with me in shorts, there would be no rescheduling,” one X user opined. “I’m more concerned about why she thinks this is okay to the point of making a video about it,” another user commented.
However, some people did voice their support. “Counterpoint: performative professionalism is an archaic concept that only exists to make power-hungry recruiters feel something in their empty existences. Unless the attire is actively offensive or sexualized, the only time attire should be a factor is if it’s a job that requires direct attention,” commented one X user.
