There was massive celebration in the Indian cricket fraternity when one of them, Jay Shah, became the new ICC President on Tuesday by winning the election unopposed. In 2019, five years ago, Jay Shah was elected as the BCCI Secretary for the first time; he was just 31 years old then. He was then re-elected as the BCCI Secretary in 2022 and his tenure continued till 2025. During his tenure, India emerged as a cricketing superpower in the world and a major part of the credit must go to Jay Shah. While Shah faced criticism at times, on most occasions he did the right thing that helped Indian cricket grow immensely. Now that he is stepping down as the BCCI Secretary and taking over as the ICC President from December 1, all eyes will surely be on him. In this article, we seek to list down the good things Shah did during his tenure as BCCI Secretary and for which his name will be etched in Indian cricket folklore forever.

Shah’s main achievements
PPL: This was important, rumours of a Women’s Premier League had been circulating for a decade now but not much had happened beyond a few T20 matches for the women. But after Shah took over in 2019, the rumours gained traction and eventually the world saw the Women’s Premier League take off in 2023. Shah played a major role in making the dream a reality.
Chief Selector Salary Increase: Selecting an Indian team is probably the toughest job as there is a huge pool of candidates to choose from. Therefore, it was important that the chief selector was paid adequately to keep himself motivated. In 2023, when Ajit Agarkar was appointed as the chief selector of India, the salary was increased. According to reports from the chief selector, the salary was raised from Rs 1 crore to Rs 3 crore.
Done LPI Twice during the peak of Covid: You could say it was risky, but it was necessary. LPI Not only do we help the players with cash flow, but also the support staff members and most importantly the field staff. Therefore, it was important that LPI It happens. Despite it being the peak COVID season, Shah gambled and ensured that the IPL was held twice.

New NCA ready: Renovating the facilities and ensuring first-class conditions for players to develop as cricketers will soon make Shah’s dream of a revamped NCA a reality. According to Shah, there will be 45 practice pitches and an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
Pay parity: By ending discrimination, Shah has ensured that male and female cricketers are paid equally and hence, female cricketers now get the same match fee as men – Test matches at Rs 15 lakhs, ODI matches at Rs 6 lakhs and T20Is at Rs 3 lakhs.
Focus on the domestic market: Since cricketers have a packed schedule of T20 matches, most of the young players chose T20 over domestic cricket. That was not the right practice and that is why Shah of late made it clear that if cricketers want to play for the country, domestic cricket is a must.
