Hundreds of supporters gathered outside the IGI airport in New Delhi and welcomed the Vineyard to the tune of ‘dhol’ as she stepped out with her husband Somvir Rathi and Congress MP Deepender Hooda around 10.30 am.
Fellow fighters Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and the panchayat leaders were given Vineyard.
She had a heartbreaking exit at the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she was disqualified for being 100 grams overweight on the day of her 50kg final.
Standing in an open Jeep, Vinesh, 29, thanked everyone who supported him.
Surrounded by a thick security cover, Vinesh’s caravan set off towards his home village Balali in Haryana.
A group of about 50 followers followed her in their jeep and offered prayers at a temple in Dwarka, Delhi, before continuing their journey to Balali.
Her caravan covered the distance of 135 kilometres from Delhi to Balali in about 10 hours while being honoured by the panchayats along the way.
Vinesh acknowledged the tremendous support: “It doesn’t matter if I didn’t get the gold medal, but the people here gave it to me. The love and respect I have received is greater than winning 1000 Olympic gold medals.”
The athlete stayed in Paris after challenging her disqualification before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and claiming a joint silver medal. Her appeal was dismissed on Wednesday.
“She has returned to her country after such a long time. She is also very excited. She will spend time with her family and calm down. What Vinesh has done for women is praiseworthy. She may not have received a medal, but she is a champion for us,” said Sakshi Malik.
Bajrang Punia said: “I told Vinesh that the love and respect he has received now is more than what he would have received after winning a gold medal. I want to thank the people of the entire nation.”
