MEXICO CITY (AP) — Social media platform X said Saturday will close its operations in Brazilclaiming that Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes threatened to arrest their legal representative in Brazil if they did not comply with the orders.
X will pull back all remaining staff in Brazil “effective immediately,” though the company said the service will still be available to Brazilian citizens. The company did not clarify how it could claim to have suspended operations while continuing to provide services to Brazilians.
Earlier this year, the The company crashed with De Moraes over freedom of expression, far-right accounts and misinformation on X. The company said its most recent orders amounted to censorship and shared a copy of the document on X.
The Supreme Court press office did not immediately respond to emailed requests for comment or to confirm the veracity of the document on Saturday.
In the United States, freedom of expression is a much more permissive constitutional right than in many countries, including Brazil, where De Moraes in April ordered an investigation into CEO Elon Musk for spreading defamatory fake news and another investigation for possible obstruction, incitement and criminal organization.
The Brazilian political right has long been characterized De Moraes overstepped his bounds to suppress freedom of expression and engage in political persecution.
