The footage, released by Israeli military officials, shows Sinwar’s desperate attempts to fend off a drone hovering over him in Rafah, southern Gaza, before he was killed in an airstrike.

In the video, the 61-year-old Hamas leader, considered the mastermind behind the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, is seen sitting alone on a sofa, with his face partially covered and without his right hand.
Noticing the drone, he attempts to shoot it down by swinging a piece of wood, but fails to make contact. Shortly after, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers called for a second airstrike on the building, which resulted in the deaths of Sinwar and two other Hamas operatives.
Israeli military officials confirmed Sinwar’s identity by matching DNA samples taken during his imprisonment in Israel. Sinwar, once a key figure in Hamas’s military wing, had been actively evading capture by moving from house to house in Gaza since Israeli retaliation began following the October 7 attacks.
The IDF, in a statement, hailed Sinwar’s death as a critical blow to Hamas’ leadership. “After a year of manhunt, IDF Southern Command soldiers eliminated Yahya Sinwar in an operation in the southern Gaza Strip,” the statement read.
The Israeli military further detailed that the operation carried out in coordination with the Shin Bet, significantly restricted Sinwar’s movements, leading to his eventual elimination.
