Yash Dayal completes the cycle of the Game of Fame, a proud moment for the entire family

Life has taken a complete turn for Yash Dayal who had become the cynosure of memes and trolls after Rinku Singh hit him for five straight sixes. This had led to tribulations not only for Yash Dayal but also for his entire family. Now life has taken a complete turn for Yash Dayal who has received his Test call-up for India in the series against Bangladesh Yash Dayal had a fantastic LPI Season followed by a fantastic Duleep trophy. In an interview, Yash Dayal’s father stated how happy the entire family is and how the trolls have stopped appearing.

Closing the circle moment for Yash Dayal

For nearly a year, Chanderpal Dayal avoided stepping out of his residence near Allahabad’s Karbala mosque in the evening. The reason was strange and painful.There were school buses passing through his locality and children leaning out of the window would start shouting “Riinnnkuuuu Siiiinghhhhh, Riiiinnnkuuuuu Siiiinghhhh, five sixes, five sixes” – a stark reminder of his son Yash’s ordeal during that fateful night in Ahmedabad when his Uttar Pradesh statemate achieved instant stardom and subsequently a national call-up by hitting him for five sixes in the final over of a LPI game between Titans of Gujarat and KKR.“It was like an accident for us,” said Chanderpal, a retired officer from the Accountant General’s Office in Allahabad, in a choked voice as he recalled those days in 2023.“The school bus would pass by and children would shout, ‘Rinku Singh, Rinku Singh, five sixes.’ It was so painful. Why did this have to happen to my son?” she asked herself, barely able to hide her tears.

But sport is undoubtedly a great leveller, and for the Dayal family, Yash’s redemption arc is the stuff of legends, as he received his first Test call-up against Bangladesh in Chennai from September 19.Yash has come full circle in the Fame Game, from being a cannon fodder for professional trolls to being considered a better bet than two Indian white-ball internationals, Khaleel Ahmed and Arshdeep Singh, in terms of being a potent Test bowler.And who would disagree that Test cricket is the best? T20 remains a delicious dessert, but Test cricket is the mouth-watering dish – the ‘mutton keema’, Yash’s favourite dish, which his family devoured while celebrating his first call-up to the national team.

But about 15 months ago, things were not the same. And let alone a delicacy like mutton keema, Yash’s mother Radha refused to eat for days after seeing her son silent for days and depressed after that ‘Rinku Night’.“His mother Radha was so distraught that she fell ill and refused to eat while Yash retreated into himself. The Titans also set him free as he had to rebuild his career,” Chanderpal recalls as if it were yesterday.“Yash fell ill but we never allowed him to think of giving up. We, as a family, made a promise: ‘Jab tak tum (Yash) India nahin khelogey, chodenge nahin. India tum khelke rahoge’ (We will not stop until you play for India. You will play for India).”“My family and I encouraged him to never think about giving up. And today he stands before you,” the pride in his voice was palpable.But as the cliché goes that tough times don’t last but tough men do, Chanderpal had to cite the example of Stuart Broad to his son, who after those six sixes, barely flinched and ended up with 600 Test scalps.“We explained to him that same evening that this was not the first time something like this had happened and it would not be the last. Yuvraj Singh hit six sixes off Stuart Broad and Broad became one of the greatest seam bowlers of all time.”

Dayal’s story is now one of resilience and redemption, proving that comebacks often speak louder than any setback.“There can’t be a more important moment for a father. For any cricketer, representing the country in Tests is the ultimate dream. It’s a big day for us, for our family and for our friends. All credit goes to him. No matter how hard he tried, it was his efforts that got him to where he is today.”“Yash is a natural God-given talent. I never had to teach him the nuances of cricket. My family and I made him mentally stronger,” he could allow himself a little indulgence from a proud father. Today is his day after all he’s been through in the last year.    In it LPI 2024, Dayal played for Royal Challengers of Bangalore and took 15 wickets in 14 matches, showing his growth and maturity as a bowler and leading them to the playoffs.His ability to swing the ball and maintain control under pressure was on full display in the ongoing Duleep Trophy as the India B pacer took three in India A’s second innings to lead them to a 76-run win in Bengaluru.

I told my family, ‘He has made his claim; now it is up to the selection committee’. They saw his potential,” Chandarpal said.

“Everyone takes wickets, but quality is also taken into account. God will never let us down. We spoke briefly and he told us to come to Chennai to watch the opening Test (against Bangladesh from September 19th).”For now, it would be difficult to make his debut as India usually play with three bowlers at home, but if Mohammed Siraj does not fully recover, there is still a chance of Dayal getting a call-up for a Test match.“With the opportunity that Chennai offers, he has an advantage as a left-hander. The rest depends on the team, we will go there for sure. And the second Test is Kanpur, where our entire family will go,” added Chandarpal, who has six elder brothers and one younger brother, all of them settled in Allahabad.
