KEY POINTS

  • Zaheer Khan has been appointed as the mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants team.
  • Gautam Gambhir was the last person to hold the mantle of LSG mentor.
  • Since he left ahead of IPL 2024, the franchise has been left without a team mentor.

Lucknow Super Giants have taken their first step to IPL 2025with many months still ahead for the mega auction of the next season. After weeks of speculation, the franchise has finally revealed Zaheer Khan as a franchise mentor, a role he previously held Gautama Gambhir. GLS introduced the former India fast bowler at a star-studded press conference that included owner Sanjiv Goenka.

Lucknow Super Giants were without a mentor for the entire IPL 2024 as Gautam Gambhir left them before the season to join as the team mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders, eventually leading them to their third IPL trophy. Gambhir, who is now the head coach of Team India, was LSG’s mentor for two IPL seasons in 2022 and 2023. Zaheer Khan now takes up the role of the franchise’s mentor for the upcoming season.

“I will ensure that the necessary process is carried out to take LSG to the next level. The upcoming season will be special,” Zaheer said after his presentation.

As per an earlier report by Cricbuzz, Zaheer Khan would take on the role of a mentor and at the same time provide key advice to the players of the franchise. He would also act as the interlocutor or the point man between the players and the management and the owner of the Lucknow Super Giants, who is known to be very passionate about the franchise.

Zaheer Khan was reportedly a strong candidate to join Gautam Gambhir’s coaching unit for the Indian team as bowling coach. However, it was Morne Morkel who eventually bagged the job.

LSG’s current coaching team consists of head coach Justin Langer and a strong coaching staff including Adam Voges, Lance Klusener, and Jonty Rhodes, among others. Cricbuzz’s report claims that another coach will also join this team at LSG, though it is unclear who that person might be.
